Action – Campus Educonline@Pris for Digital Inclusion
Description – Education is a universal right and plays a crucial role in human development, helping the individual to build his personality and character. Even in a situation of imprisonment, and taking into account the Council of Europe Recommendations on Education in Prisons and the European Prison Rules, citizens have the same rights in accessing education.
Based on these assumptions and within the scope of the protocol signed in April 2016 between Universidade Aberta (UAb) and the Directorate General for Reinsertion and Prison Services (DGRSP), an innovative pilot project is being developed, the Digital Campus EDUCONLINE@PRIS (educonlinepris.uab.pt), whose main objective is to promote education, training and digital inclusion in Portuguese prisons.
Operating since the beginning of November 2018 in the prisons of Custóias-Porto, Paços de Ferreira, Vale do Sousa and Santa Cruz do Bispo-Porto (Female), the Campus aggregator website was created, based on two Moodle platforms, one that gives access to Universidade Aberta’s degrees, and another, -ON@PRIS- that gives access to actions and courses created specifically for prisoners, in terms of training for digital skills.
Since November 2019, training actions have been developed in the areas: 1) Active Citizenship and Participation; 2) Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship; 3) Health Literacy; 4) Communication and human relationship skills; and 5) Competence and Digital Citizenship. These training actions, totaling 700 hours, will last 50 hours each, in the blended learning modality (16 classroom hours and 34 in a virtual learning environment), with the support of the ON@PRIS digital platform, which integrates the Digital Campus EDUCONLINE@PRIS.
