Action – Ready for BioData Management? A Capacity Building Program in Data Management for the Life Sciences
Description – “Ready for BioData Management?” is a data management skills program for life sciences to enable researchers and institutions to manage their data more effectively and efficiently.
The rate of scientific data production is increasing exponentially. To address this challenge, good data management practices in compliance with FAIR data principles are essential. This has been recognized by funders and science publishers who are enforcing open science policies and adhering to FAIR principles. The life sciences research community is now being asked to recognize the importance and added value of data management and acquire the skills and competencies needed to implement data management practices on a daily basis.
Currently, “Ready for BioData Management?” has two courses: 1) Introduction to Data Management Plans and 2) Advanced Data Management Plans
1 . 1. Introduction of Data Management Plans is an introductory course with the objective of disseminating the best practices of Data Management and teaching the basic concepts of elaboration and use of Data Management Plans (DMP) in the context of the researched activities. The course is available in two modalities: a two-hour theoretical class with discussions and a practical course throughout the day with group exercises. In both modalities, the course features two lectures on research data
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are offering both modalities in the distance learning paradigm, online courses through the Zoom platform. The practical group exercise is carried out through the Zoom group session rooms, where participants jointly fill in the DMP with the Google spreadsheet template.
1 . 1. Advanced Data Management Plans
” Ready for BioData Management? – Advanced Data Management Plans” is a one-day practical course in which participants are guided through the process of preparing a real DMP of a real research project, according to the DMP H2020 model. This course assumes that participants know the basics of DMPs.
There will be a presentation lecture on the DMPOnline platform in which participants will use it and another lecture with an overview of the DMP H2020 model; however, most of the course will be a practical session where they will prepare a DMP on the platform, in pairs. Participants will be encouraged to bring their own research project or a project plan if they are interested in producing a DMP that is relevant to them.
Courses on “Day-to-Day Data Management” and “FAIR Plant Data with MIAPPE” are being prepared
“The Ready for BioData Management? Introductory Course” was developed in 2019 and was taught in person at several institutions in Portugal, from Braga to Faro. Since July 2020 it is being taught online.
